The 2026 Breeders' Cup World Championships ended Saturday night at Keeneland with the result many Kentucky racing fans had hoped for. Sovereignty, the 2025 Kentucky Derby winner, swept past his stablemate in the stretch and won the $7 million Longines Breeders' Cup Classic by 1¾ lengths. It was his last race. By Sunday, the plan was to send him a few miles down the road to begin his second career at Jonabell Farm in Lexington.

At a glance Key takeaways
  • Sovereignty won the $7 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland by 1¾ lengths in 2:00.36, a year after a fever kept him out of the race.
  • It was his final start: he retires with eight wins in 13 starts and joins the Darley stallion roster at Jonabell Farm in Lexington for 2027.
  • Aidan O'Brien won three races, including the Turf with Benvenuto Cellini, and now has 23 Breeders' Cup wins.
  • Two-day attendance at Keeneland was 81,604; the event moves to Belmont Park in 2027.

A second chance, taken

A year ago, Sovereignty was the morning-line favorite for the Classic but missed the race after spiking a fever once entries had been taken. He was still named 2025 Horse of the Year. His path back was not smooth either: Godolphin says a foot abscess kept him out of his planned prep race, the Jockey Club Gold Cup.

None of that showed on Saturday. Trained by Bill Mott and ridden by Junior Alvarado, Sovereignty settled in fifth, moved up around the far turn and took over from Knightsbridge, also trained by Mott for Godolphin, early in the stretch. He held off The Puma, with Knightsbridge third, and covered the 1¼ miles on a fast track in 2:00.36. Godolphin notes that he was its first Kentucky Derby winner and is now its first Breeders' Cup Classic winner as well. After the race, Mott told NBC Sports that the team had kept him in training for the chance to showcase him this year, and called him a real classic runner.

Retiring to a farm 3.4 miles from the track

Godolphin had already announced that the Classic would be Sovereignty's final start. He retires with eight wins in 13 career starts and, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader, about $10.5 million in lifetime earnings. He and Knightsbridge will join the Darley stallion roster at Jonabell Farm in Lexington for the 2027 breeding season. Sporting Post, citing the Breeders' Cup, reported that Jonabell sits just 3.4 miles from Keeneland, so his trip into retirement is a short one.

The rest of the weekend's champions

Europe kept its hold on the grass. Benvenuto Cellini, trained by Aidan O'Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore, won the $5 million Turf, the seventh straight win in that race for a European-trained horse. O'Brien also won the Juvenile Turf with Haffner and the Juvenile Fillies Turf with Sun Goddess. That gave him 23 Breeders' Cup wins, the most of any trainer, NBC Sports reported.

There were plenty of other stories. Nitrogen won the Distaff for trainer Mark Casse and jockey Jose Ortiz, who also won the Filly and Mare Turf on Kathynmarissa, a daughter of American Pharoah. Miguel Clement won the Mile with Deterministic, a year after the death of his father, trainer Christophe Clement. In the Dirt Mile, Further Ado beat Owen Almighty by a nose in a photo finish, the kind of moment our pewter By A Nose ornament was made for. Further Ado now retires to stud at Spendthrift.
